Biography
Rachel Hall, the wife of Benjamin Cleveland, was born in 1714 in Canterbury, Windham, Connecticut, and died in 1792 in Lyme, Grafton, New Hampshire. Benjamin and Rachel had 10 children: Joseph, Benjamin, Dorothy, Abigail, Zenas, Rachel, Persis, Rufus, Mary, and Phebe.[1]
According to Horace Gillette Cleveland in 1879, "The most earnest and persistent endeavors have been made to ascertain the maiden name of this lady, the date and place of her birth, and the names of her parents. Of the six grandchildren living, not one is at all sure of any facts concerning her, save that her given name was Rachel. She has been referred to by different correspondents and descendants, as a Hall, a Pearson, a Stebbins and a Hyde. Mrs. Lois H. Woodworth, of Concord, N.H., who manifested the liveliest interest in the preparation of this work until her last sickness in 1877, stated that she had always understood her father (Abner Hovey) to say, one of his grandmothers was a Perkins, and the other a Hall. Certain it is that the mother of Samuel Hovey was Elizabeth Perkins; but as yet nothing has been received to determine as certainly the maiden name, etc., of Rachel, wife of Benjamin Cleveland. The compiler will be glad to compensate anyone who can furnish the desired information concerning her pedigree."[2]
