Rachel Friedman

Rachel was born in Ponevys on the 25th December 1895. She arrived in South Africa with her parents in 1897. Rachel attended the Jewish Gonvernment School in Johannesburg. This dark haired blue eyed woman married Zundel (Zunder) Friedman, the son of Josia and Perel Friedman in 1915. Zundel never forgot travelling steerage and how ill he had been on his journey to South Africa. He dreamt of one day boarding a ship as a first-class passenger and being able to enjoy his journey. He became a wealthy man and realised his dream to enjoy a 1st Class Trip, sadly only to experience continuous sea sickness the entire journey, he just would never make a sailor.

Rachel became a housewife and mother to 5 children, 4 daughters and one son. Rachel was always well-groomed, well-dressed and was a superb cook and loved home-making.

Rachel and Zundel Friedman finally moved to Elba Court, Friedland Ave, Cyrildene.

Zundel Friedman died on the 4th February 1952 and Rachel died on the 22nd May 1970 aged 76, from Sclerosis of the Liver.
