Biography

Rachel Bassett and her husband Ephraim Silsbee settled in Lynn and were the parents of Henary (Henry) Silsbee, the father of Lydia who married Aholiab Diamond of Marblehead, and whose daughter Mary was the famous "Moll Pitcher," a woman who gained international fame as a clairvoyant. "Capt. Ephraim Silsbee was born, probably at Salem, between 1665 and 1670 and died before March 1729 (settlement of his estate). He married at Lynn, 23 January 1693, Rachel Bassett, born at Lynn, 12 March 1660, daughter of William and Sarah (Burt) Bassett. The Bassetts were Quakers and Ephraim Silsbee was also.

Administration of the estate of Capt. Ephraim Silsbee, was given to Rachel Silsbee of Lynn, widow. The inventory included 2 black cows, a black heifer, a colt, 8 sheep, 2 shoats, and an old horse. Real estate included a dwelling house and barn, the homestead and 6 acres, 12 acres in the lower field, 2 acres of fresh marsh, 8 acres of salt Marsh, 29 acres and 4 poles common lots, 1 1/4 acre in Nahant. Total real estate 496 pounds, 5 shillings, 6 pence. Personal estate 81 pounds 10 shilling 6 pence. Total 577 pounds 15 shillings. Signed: Henry Silsby, Richard Johnson, William Collins and Edmond Lewis. Sworn at Marblehead, 24 Jan 1728/9. 1/3rd of the real estate was set off to Rachel Silsbee, also the E end of the house with 1/2 of the cellar, etc. 1/2 of the barn, 1/2 of lowland and orchard, 4 acres in the lower field in the new pasture of Henry Collins; 3 acres lot in Seldom Good Pasture and the garden before the house. Singing the division were Richard Johnson, Ebenezer Burrill, William Collins, Edmund Lewis and Benjamin Newhall (Essex County Probate, 25305; Record Book 316:24/5)."
