Again from the Basset Book: The immigrant ancestor of the Basset family of Lynn, MA and Salem Co, NJ, was William, who came to New England at the age of 11 in 1635. His parents, Roger and Ann Holland were married in St. Martin's church, dorking, County Surrey, England on 27 apr 1623. The record still exists as well as the baptismal record for William on May 30, 1624. apparently their only child. Nothing is known of the family background of Roger and Ann. Roger died in England and Ann came to America with her new husband, Hugh Burt on the ship Abigail 17 Jun 1635. (http://genforum.genealogy.com/elwell/messages/357.html)

I knew the history of the Mayflower, the Pilgrims and the Salem Witch Trials but it never dawned on me how closely in time they occurred. But the Bassett & Proctors were persecuted and probably spurred on by jealousy or revenge.

Elizabeth Proctor's husband was hanged and only because she was pregnant was she spared and by the time she delivered the frenzy had passed. But her teen-age children were tortured so that they would confess and her sister-in-law, I believe brother William's wife was also accused since she was a Midwife/Healer. But their property and belongings were confiscated and it took years to be reimbursed and if not for her parents they couldn't have survived. But John Proctor wrote a letter to the governor while is prison pleading for mercy as they were all innocent but they were still hanged
