Ragnild Nielsdatter

The Vestre Slidre bygdebok on page 438 states that her name was Berit Nielsdatter of Ellestad. The parish baptism records do not exist prior to the birth of her last three children. At the time of the baptisms of her two youngest sons, Tosten and Halvor, it lists their mother's name as Berit Nielsdatter. However, at the time of her youngest child, Anne, it lists her mother's name as Ragnild Nielsdatter. In her and her husband's will in 1740 it lists her name as Ragnild Nielsdatter. There is a burial listed for a Ragnild Nielsdatter of Egge in 1758; there is no such listing for a Berit Nielsdatter of Egge. Of her seven children, five of them have a daughter named Ragnild, usually their first born or one of their first born children- a child almost always was named after his or her grandparent. It seems her son, Halvor, and his wife did not have any children. For these reasons, I believe her name was most likely Ragnild Nielsdatter. I still consider her to be the daughter of Niels Håvolsen and Berit Halvorsdatter of Ellestad.
