'HILL. 1. Ralph, was early at Plymouth. The tradition, in his family, that he came from Billericay is prob. and strengthened by the fact that there was a clergyman bearing the same name in Essex, 1645-69, (See David's Annals of Nonconformity in Essex, p. 440), whose wife was Persis , and who had dau. Sarah bap. at Shalford, 1645, Aug. 10. In 1650. he was at Ridgwell, "a godly preaching minister;" afterwards, at Pattiswick. where he was 'ejected,' and in 1669, he is reported at Sheldon, " having a conventicle there." Our Ralph Hill "of Wellingsly," prob. a locality in Plymouth, sold 1643, Sept. 16, for £12. to Stephen Wood, house and garden, upland at Wobery," 12 acres or thereabout; and we soon after find him in Woburn, where he was freeman, 1647 ; Selectman in 1649. He joined in the settlement of Shawshin as early as any; and lived on ' the farm.' a mile south-west of the village, his house standing a little west of the place where Mrs. Judkins, his descendant, now lives. In April. 1663, he gave the town one-half acre of land for a " buring place." and on the 29th, he died. — his own body, doubtless, the first to be laid in the old 'south' burying ground. His wife d. and he m. 1638. (Savage.) Margaret Toothaker, mother of Roger. 1, who d. 1683, Nov. 22, aged 76. Ch. Jane, b. in England. In the will of Ralph Hill, a gr.-dau., Mary Littlefield, is mentioned. Francis Littlefield, of Woburn, and his wife Jane had a dau.   • 2. Ralph, son of Ralph. 1, b. in England or at Plymouth. He had a lot on the township, on the Andover road, where I. G. Kimball lived, which he sold to John Poulter. and bought, 1656, May 16, of William Baker, the "farme" lot south of his father's. His house stood just north of Mrs. Boyden's place and was one of the 'garrisons' of 1675. It stood with its ancient windows, until after 1850. He m. 1660. Nov. 15, Martha Toothaker, the dau. of his step-mother, and d. 1695. April 9; his widow d. 1703-4, Jan. 4, aged about 69. Ch. Elizabeth b. 1661, July 28; m. 1687, June 2.   • Roger Toothaker (November 27, 1634, England – June 1692, Massachusetts) was a physician who came to Massachusetts from England shortly after he was born. He was one of the victims of the Salem witch trials who died in prison.
  • Background
  • Roger Toothaker was born in England in 1634. In 1635 Toothaker travelled to Boston from London sailing from August 21 to September 11 on the Hopewell, led by Captain Babb. Afterwards in 1638 his father, Roger Toothaker, died, possibly in Plymouth on February 5. Later that year his mother 'Margaret married Ralph Hill on December 21 and they lived in Billerica'. He served as an assistant to Samuel Eldred, and later became a physician although he had no formal medical training. 'Around 1662 to 1663 his stepfather Ralph Hill died'. In 1665 he married Mary Allin and had nine children, Nathaniel, Martha, Allin, Roger, Sarah, Mary, Mary, Andrew, and Margaret.[1] His daughter Mary died the year she was born, and another child born the next year was given her name. In 1683 Margaret was born and Nathaniel, the second-born Mary, and Dr. Toothaker's mother died. . . . .

Roger Toothaker 1

Roger Toothaker was born in England about 1612. He came to New England in 1635 on the Hopewell, along with his wife Margaret, then 28, and his infant son Roger. Roger died by 5 February 1637/8 when 'widow Margaret Toothaker was granted land. Margaret remarried to Ralph Hill on 21 December 1638 in Plymouth Colony. They were in Woburn by 1645 and in Billerica by 1654. Margaret died at Billerica 22 December 1683.'

9th great-grandfather of Darrell Allen Martin.

    He was early at Plymouth. In 1643 he was "of Wellingsly", probably in Plymouth, as he sold land to Stephen Wood. In 1647 he was a freeman in Woburn; in 1649 he was a selectman. He was one of the earliest settlers of "Shawshin" in Billerica. In April 1663 he gave the town one-half acre of land for a "buring place," and when he died on the 29th his body was mas most likely the first to be laid in "the old 'south' burying ground." Ralph was born say 1600. He married ? (--?--) say 1625. He married Margaret (--?--) in 1638. Ralph died on 29 April 1663 in Billerica, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He was buried in Billerica, Mass..
