Born in Kansas, Ralph joined traveling threshing crews as a young man, harvesting grain from Texas to the Canadian border. In 1906, he came to Fremont County, WY, homesteading in the newly opened Riverton Project. In 1909 he moved to Lander, and married Pearl Elizabeth Fister on Christmas Day, 1910. He was a carpenter and contract builder for a number of years, and in 1922 took over the planing mill at the Fremont Lumber Company, where he worked for 34 years. Ralph and Pearl had five children, Arrhene, Clarence, Helen, Robert, and Carol.
