Frank was born to Samuel and Angeline Kohl Mitchell in Centerville, Kansas. In 1895 the family moved across the border to Bates County, Missouri, and farmed in the area around Amoret and Virginia. In 1905 Frank married Willa Louise Cumiford and they initially lived in Amsterdam, Missouri. About 1911, they relocated to Johnson County, Nebraska. The family joined Willa's brother John Cumiford in Mountainair, New Mexico in 1920, but stayed only a year, returning to Johnson County. Frank farmed two miles south of Tecumseh for over 20 years before retiring and moving in to town in 1943. Their home in Tecumseh was on the northeast corner of 2nd and Greeley Streets.
