About Ralph Starke
Had skull surgery for osteomyelitis when he was 9 years old. Wore a helmut as protection and was out of school for 2-4 years(?). Parents took out life insurance policy thinking he might die in surgery. Tried to join National Guard (didn't require much vetting in those days) and then was discovered to have head injury and was dismissed! Went on to be a hydraulics salesman and then Regional Manager for Gates Rubber Company. Married with 4 kids. Battled alcoholism till his retirement and was sober till his death of cancer of the jaw in 2003.
