About Ramona Arguelles
Ramona Arguelles outlived Tomas Corpus and she found love again in Luis Yangco, a businessman. She lived comfortably in her own home and managed a dress shop and another store in Ermita. He also had a bazaar nearby and was still expanding his shipping business. She gave birth to an only son, Teodoro Yangco, who emerged as one of the first great Filipino industrial and transportation tycoons in the late nineteenth and twentieth century. Remaining single, Don Teodoro was very close to his half nieces and nephews, particularly Amalia Corpus who lived with him and Ramona in his family compound in Paco, Manila.
In Samuel Stagg's biography of his close friend Teodoro Yangco (Lolo Doyong), he wrote that Ramona and Luis were married. This is echoed by Gregorio Zaide and other historians in their accounts of their relationship.
However facts and circumstances tend not to support this. In his will, Luis Yangco declared Teodoro as his natural but not legitimate child. This was the basis for a Supreme court ruling in a famous case, Corpus vs Corpus, denying claims to the Yangco fortune. It is also written in family accounts that
Ramona's family were against a wedding because of their Sinophobia and Luis was Chinese. However it should be noted that his father was a sangley mestizo and his mother, a Spanish mestiza. More likely, they did not marry because of their age gap. When Ramona bore Teodoro in 1861, Luis was barely 20 and she was 33 and already bore several children from Pablo Corpus who had recently oassed.
Whatever the circumstances, Lolo Doyong became very close to his mother and half-siblings, more so than his father and his subsequent wives.
Ramona went on and had a 3rd union or perhaps marriage
