The Beaumont family, then Beaumont-Brienne, dominated this region of Maine from the 10th to the 14th century
Main article: List of Viscounts of Maine .
Biography
Raoul IV , Viscount of Le Mans, also called Raoul III (cf. the article Raoul II ), son of Raoul III de Beaumont and, it is believed, of Godeheult 1 , ceded to Geoffroy de Sablé , his younger brother, the necessary land to the construction and endowment of Solesmes , around 1010 ; witnessed from 1012 to 1016 , the confirmation of the priory of Tuffé at the abbey of Saint Vincent , by Count Hugue; went to Rome under the pontificate of BenedictVIII (1012-1024) to reconfirm the foundationofÉvron; witnessed with the bishop ofAngersthe freeing of two serfs inMarmoutier(1022-1024). He or his son bore the name of Roscelin, diminutive of Raoul. RaoulIVdied before1040.
We do not know the name of his wife, Hildegarde (?), or Eremburge, or Widenor (daughter of Savari III de Thouars ?), who appeared in 1012 , with her two sons and her daughter-in-law, Godeheult, in the act of confirmation. by Richard II of Normandy from the domain of Longueville to the Abbatiale Saint-Ouen de Rouen . The couple had two sons:
Raoul V or IV (Roscelin) , who succeeded his father;
Geoffroy, stem of the house of Braitel (Braiteau, Bresteau at Lombron ). He is known as the son and brother of Raoul, uncle of Viscount Hubert. He almost always wears in the numerous acts where he appears the title of viscount, which has caused him to be taken as a tutor of his nephew Hubert, falsely, because he does not take the title of viscount of Maine, but only of viscount, even in acts subsequent to the death of his nephew. The same custom will be followed by the viscounts of Montreveau , his nephews. Geoffroy is the first who bore the name of Beaumont.
Geoffroi married Hervise de Braitel, sole heiress of Hugue(s) de Braitel and Erma; raised the name of this family and had several children:
Guillaume, named no doubt by his maternal great-grandfather;
Hugue(s), who bore the name of his grandfather;
Geoffroi(y), who had that of his father;
Eude(s), bastard son, is often mentioned in the Cartulary of Saint-Vincent ."
