Raymond R. Gant, Jr.

Raymond R. (Sonny) Gant, 72, Yorktown, died Saturday at Ball Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Gant, who was born in Yorktown, graduated from Yorktown High School in 1942. He was a Navy veteran and attended Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. He became Justice of the Peace for Mount Pleasant Township in 1955, and he was Township assessor from 1967 -1968. He helped establish a town court for the city and was elected judge in 1975. He was appointed Veterans Affairs Officer of Delaware County in 1984 until retiring in 1987. He started the Yorktown High School Alumni Association and was the first president. He was a volunteer fireman for the Yorktown Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years.

Mr. Gant was a past board member of the Yorktown Zoning Board of Appeals and charter member and current director of the Yorktown Lions Club. He also was a member of Moose Lodge 33, Yorktown American Legion Post 321 and Eagles Lodge FOE 231. He was a member of Yorktown United Methodist Church. He received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award in 1995 and was a Boy Scout leader.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Shirley Howard Gant; three sons, Stephen J. Gant, Jeffrey R. Gant (wife-Kathy), and Timothy H. Gant (wife-Lisa), all of Yorktown; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Yorktown United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Yorktown Cemetery. Calling will be 3-8 p.m. Tuesday in Gant-Richman Funeral Home.
