- During the Civil War, George began his service as a naval captain in the Atlantic Blockading Squadron. He commanded the steamer USS Pocahontas, before being promoted to commodore on 16 July 1862. He took command of the screw-sloop Pawnee and joined the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron in its operations near Charleston, South Carolina and nearly islands, rivers, and creeks, and then along the Georgia and South Carolina coasts during Maj. Gen. William Sherman's campaigns in that area.
