About Rear-Admiral Leicester Chantry Keppel

"Served as midshipman in His Majesty’s Ship Bellerophon, 1854. Was actively engaged in embarking the army at Varna and landing at Old Fort. Served at Eupatoria in defense of that town.

At bombardment of Sevastopol, 1854, and bombarded Fort Constantine at 600 yards. Served in His Majesty’s Ship Magicienne, at bombardment in destruction of Friedericksham, 1855. In charge of boat under lire against Viborg, and lifted two infernal machines when under fire and cleared passage.

In charge of mortar vessel at bombardment of Seveaborg, 1855. Was engaged with Russian artillery at Ravenoari in Finland, 1855. Engaged in suppression of Slave Trade on East Coast of Africa and captured several slave dhows under fire, 1861.

Served in expedition up Zambesi with Doctor Livingstone. In command of gun-boats Janus and Insolent at Chefoo, 1867-69. Kept Neinfe Rebels in check.

Obtained redress for outrages on British subjects at Jamone, Formosa, 1868 (received thanks of Commander-in-Chief and Her Majesty’s Minister). Punished piratical natives for attack on Sharp Peak River Min, Chefoo, and attacked Pington and subdued natives at Foochowfoo (received official thanks, 1869). West Coast of Africa — served in Niger Expedition Avhen several piratical villages were destroyed, and severe punishment inflicted on river pirates, 1877 (despatches).

As Commander in His Majesty’s Ship Avou up Congo, commanded expedition for punishment of pirates, who had attacked and pillaged American vessel Josejjh Nickeroon (received approval of Lord Derby, also approval from their Lordships for skill and gallantry with which the operations were conducted, as well as approval of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs). Commanded His (or Her) Majesty ships Constance and Cleopatra in China and Japan. Flag-Captain to Commander-in-Chief at Nore, etc."
