About Rear Admiral Lord John Hay, CB, DL, MP
rear-admiral, married Mary Cameron.
Lord John Hay, the third son, joined the royal navy, and, after many distinguished services, rose to the rank of rear-admiral. In 1846 he was appointed one of the Lords of the Admiralty, and in the following year was elected Member of Parliament for Windsor.
Naval commander. The third son of George Hay, 7th Marquess of Tweeddale, Hay joined the navy in 1804, the year bith his father and mother died while detained in France by Napoleon. He served in the Mediterranean and the West Indies, rising to the rank of Commander by 1814 and Captain by 1818. In 1846 he served briefly as the Superintendent of the Woolwich dockyard, then successively as Commissioner of the Admiralty (1846-5) and Commodore Superintendent of the Plymouth Dockyard (1850-51). He was promoted to Rear-Admiral shortly before his death.
He served as Member of Parliament for Haddington (1826-30) and for Windsor (England, 1847-50).

1833 Received silver medal from the "Society for Encouragement of Arts, &c" for his invention of a telescope holder for a one-handed person.
1837 Received Grand Cross of the Spanish Order of Charles III.
17 February 1837 C.B. (Companion of the Bath) for service off Spain.
1846 Married Mary Anne, eldest daughter of Donald Cameron of Lochiel.
1846 Chairman of the Board of Naval Construction.
1847 1850 M.P. (Liberal) for Windsor (until he resigned).
18?? Deputy-Lieutenant for Co Haddington.
