Life Sketch

Married in Roxbury 9 May 1646 Rebecca Crooke, daughter of Roger Crooke (in his will, dated 2 March 1638/9, "Roger Crooke in the town of Hammersmith of the parish of Fulham in the county of Middlesex" in England included a bequest to "three daughters, Mary, Rebecca, and Ruth Crooke;" on 12 December 1646, "Peter Gardiner of Roxbury, carpenter, & Rebecca his wife constituted Michaell Powell of Dedham in New England their lawful attorney to ask & receive &c. a certain legacy ... given unto the said Rebecca by the last will & testament of Roger Crooke of Hammersmith near London, tailor, deceased"). She died at Roxbury on 10 June 1675 "in her 45th year," and was buried there on 11 June 1675.
They had 11 children: Rebecca Crafts, Peter, Thomas, Sarah, John, Samuel, Joseph, Sarah Gore, Benjamin, Ebenezer, & Jonathan. Ferris lists two daughters named Rebecca in this family, one baptized on 9 November 1647, who died soon, and the second baptized on 24 March 1649/50, along with a brother Peter. The published Roxbury vital records include both these baptisms, but only the second is found in Rev. John Eliot's church record. The supposed first baptism may in fact have been a birth record instead, which would make Rebecca the first child of this couple, born about eighteen months after marriage. But this bumps up against the recorded date of birth for Peter, on 24 June 1648, only seven months later. The next recorded child was not born until 1 May 1652, four years after Peter, so perhaps the birth date for Peter should be 24 June 1649. This solution is supported by the record of church membership for the parents. Peter Gardner apparently never became a church member, and his wife was not admitted until late 1649 or early 1650. Thus, there could not be a child of this couple baptized in 1647. Very soon after her admission to church membership, then, Rebecca (Crooke) Gardner brought in her first two children for baptism. We have arranged the children of this couple according to this analysis.
