Benjamin James, cordwainer, was born probably about 1688-90, and he died probably just before August 4, 1740, whenthe town council directed his widow concerning administration of his estate. He married first, before 1720, Rebecca Woodman, who was born at Newport January 10, 1690 and died after 1721 but before May 15, 1728, daughter of Lieutenant John Woodman and Hannah Timberlake.

The identity of Benjamin James' first wife, and the existence of a married daughter, are revealed in an accounting dated February 3, 1746/7 at Newport by Richard Billings, administrator of the estate of Sylvia Woodman. The account includes the notation: "to goods delivered to John Burgess for ye heirs of Rebecca James, deceased, 11 pounds, 12 shillings, with a marginal note: "Portsmouth, 1742."
