About Rebecca Ogden
Rebekah Wood Ogden BIRTH Nov 1648 DEATH 11 Sep 1723 (aged 74), Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey, USA BURIAL First Presbyterian Churchyard, Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey, USA, MEMORIAL ID 6079243
Mrs. Ogden, nee Rebekah Wood, was born in November 1648. The wife of Jonathan Ogden and mother of their children, she died at age 74. Her brown sandstone stele is painstakingly cut but devoid of ornamentation, as are many of the earliest colonial era stones in New Jersey.
Its lack of even a "winged skull" soul effigy, an image which had become popular by the early 1700's, could reflect a number of possibilities: religious-based discomfort with "graven images", the absence of a skilled carver, or the need to economize, to name but a few. Unlike the majority of colonial era gravestones, Mrs. Ogden's gives the month and year of her birth. "Anonymous" Photos added by Nikita Barlow
