In 1880, she was listed as Rebecca Quillin (19), a servant in the household of John M. Hays (40), a carpenter in Reynoldsville, Jefferson, Pennsylvania. The household included his wife Sinaette (29) and their children Aubert (12), Irine (7), and John (1 month). This John Hayes as a child was a neighbor of Rebecca's father.

At the time of the 1880 census Rebecca's father was re-married and living in Iowa. Her mother was "insane" and living with an apparently unrelated family in Winslow. Her sister Mary was also a servant living in Reynoldsville. Their younger brother Sheridan was living with relatives in Washington, Jefferson, Pennsylvania.

Her 1911 marriage record shows she had been married once previously but still had the name Becca Quilin
