comments

Please provide proof of parentage.

From Ancestors of George Walker BUSH (1942- ) — Pedigree Chart of Rebecca WHEELER (1645-1718)

"*Most secondary sources have the same parents for Rebecca SAYRE as for her mother-in-law, Alice SAYRE.  Setting aside the improbability of a woman marrying her nephew, Rebecca cannot be Alice's sister for the simple reason that both William SAYRE and Alice SQUIRE died years before Rebecca was born!  Rebecca's parents are unknown."

"There is no evidence to support her as daughter of William Sayre & Olive Irby. Please document if this is a belief."

Biography

All that is known about her is that she was named as Thomas's wife Rebecca in his will. And that she was named as her mother in Abiah's 1637will. Everything else about her is pure speculation.
Rebecca was born around 1572.<ref name="findgrave">"Find A Grave Index," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/QVGM-4CK5 : 11 July 2016), Rebecca 1653; Burial, Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England, St Peter and St Paul Churchyard; citing record ID 110143975, Find a Grave, http://www.findagrave.com.</ref> She may have died in 1653 at Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England, and buried on 3 May 1653 at St.Peter and St. Paul Churchyard, Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England, although the burial entry is for "widow Wheeler" so could have been any other widow Wheeler living in Cranfield at that time.<ref>The parish register of Cranfield 1600-1812. Note

The biography for Thomas Wheeler states in the marriages and children section that he married first an unknown wife who is later stated to be Mary Mynsterly.<ref name="threfall">Threlfall, John Brooks, Fifty Great Migration Colonists to New England and Their Origins Madison, WI: J.B. Threlfall, 1990, pp. 504-508</ref> His secondwife Rebecca Unknown is mentioned in his will.<ref name="threfall" />The names of all his children are shown matching each to the correct spouse and Rebecca is named as Rebecca _____.<ref>The American Genealogist. (Vol 14 1937-38 Pages 1-) New Haven, CT: D. L. Jacobus, 1937-. (Online database accessed August 26, 2015. AmericanAncestors.org. New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2009 - .)</ref> There is only one reference found that states that her parents are William Sayre and Elizabeth Squire, but it appears to be based solely on family trees.<ref>http://www.gulbangi.com/5families-o/p114.htm#i2830</ref> The Sayer Family information does not corroborate this. The children shown for William and Elizabeth are Francis, William, Robert, Alice and Thomas.<ref name="hissem">Hissem, S. (2016, January 18). The Hissem-Montague Family - The Sayre Family. Retrieved February 14, 2017, from http://shissem.com/Hissem_Sayre.html.</ref> Some have thought thatshe was a child of William and Alice Squire/Squyre. They did not havea daughter named Rebecca. Their children were William, Thomas, Alice,Agnes, and implausibly, another Alice. And William died in 1563/4which would make Rebecca 56 when she had her last child in 1620, so William and Alice can be ruled out as her parents.<ref name="hissem" />

Sundry Observations of David Cooper (Cooper-13819)

- In his will dated 8 Aug 1572, which is damaged and very difficult toread, William Sayre names his children William, Robert, Francis and Alice, and "the child in my wifes womb". There is a chance that this child born late 1572 or early 1573 could have been Rebecca. Proving it would be all but impossible given the missing Podington parish register. Against this thought is the will of Thomas Sayre, William's brother, dated 30 May 1581 (https://archive.org/stream/sayrefamilylinea01bant#page/6/mode/1up) in which he leaves bequests to his nephews and niece, children of his late brother William: William, Thomas, Robert, Francis and Alice. But no mention of a Rebecca. I think the unborn child in 1572 was Thomas. - I don't buy Hissem's unsourced idea that William and Alice (Squire) Sayre had two daughters named Alice. In their respective wills dated 15 Feb 1563 and 20 Apr 1567 they only mention one daughter named Alice - Alice West, also named in Thomas Sayre's 1581 will. I simply believe that the maiden name of Alice Wheeler, wife of John Wheeler, is not known, and I certainly don't believe that she was Alice daughter of William and Alice Sayre of Podington. - I can't find this alleged marriage of 11 Feb 1601 in Bedfordshire inany source that I have. It doesn't show in Cranfield parish register transcript. I always get worried when an exact date is given, but no place! None of the Cranfield baptisms of the children of Thomas Wheelername a mother - How sure is it that the burial in Cranfield on 3 May 1653 is that ofRebecca? The entry in the register merely refers to her as "widow Wheeler". - The profile of her husband says that Rebecca and all the children left for New England shortly after her husband's death, implying that the 1653 burial of widow Wheeler is that of a different Wheeler's widow.
