John Coggeshall

John's farm, which he inherited from his father, was partly in Newport, RI and partly in Portsmouth, RI between his brother Joshua's farm on the south and his brother, Daniel's farm on the north. He married Mary Stanton, daughter of John Stanton and Mary Harndell.

The tombstones erected to his memory of John and his wife, Mary on the old family farm were still standing in 1930 when "The Coggeshalls of America" was written. A picture of the home of John Coggeshall can be found in the book mentioned above on p. 14a.

John Coggeshall was secretary of the colony from 1676 to 1677 and from May, 1691 to August, 1692; treasurer of the colony May 17, 1653 to Sept. 12, 1654 and 1664 to 1672.

On March 13, 1676, the court convened to discuss the unrest in Rhode Island by the Indians. Roger Williams met with them and warned them not to attack, but on March 29 or 30, the town was assaulted and 54 homes on the north end were burned. In April of that year, the assembly organized a service of boats for defense of the bay, with a third of the men from Portsmouth. Those in charge of included John Coggeshall.

At another session in April, 1677, it was ordered that the powder, ammunition, and bread, in the custody of John Coggeshall, treasurer, and William Brinkley, Comissary belonging to the Island... to be delivered unto Walter Clarke Governor by him for security.
