Joshua B. Davis served in the Union army during the American Civil War in Companies A, H and F&S, 31st Illinois Infantry Regiment. He entered service on 15 Aug 1861 and mustered in on 18 Sep 1861 in Cairo, IL with the rank of Private in Company A. On 17 Dec 1863 in Big Black, MS he re-enlisted as a Veteran and was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in Company H on 15 Sep 1864. He was promoted to Regimental Quartermaster on 20 June 1865 in Louisville, KY. He mustered out on 19 Jul 1865 in Louisville, KY.
