On the way to Kentucky, Renald was accidentally shot & killed by one of his sons so he was buried on the side of the road.

Renald Rene II was the son of Dr. Renald Rene La Force I who was a French Huguenot that helped settle Manakin Town, VA. Renald Rene I married Sarah (last name unknown) & together they had 4 children: Renald Rene II who married Agnes Moseby, Sarah who married William Harding, Rachel who never married or had kids & died at the age of 28 (near as we know), & Judith who married Robert Burton Sr & Samuel Paul.

Renald Rene II & his wife Agnes decided to leave VA for KY. On the way Renald was accidentally shot & killed by one of his sons so he was buried on the side of the road. Acc'd to Dr. Cameron Allen he died sometime between the latter part of 1779 and 28 Jun 1780. Then about Jun 26/28 1780 his wife & some children were captured by the British & Indians at Martin's Station. They were forced to march to Canada & were held as POW's until after the Revolutionary War.

Renald & Agnes' children were: Zulina, Trephenah, Samuel, Robert, Mount Moncier, Renald Rene III, Agnes, Ann, & Judith. They may have had at least one more but if so we don't know the name. Agnes was captured with a William Bailey La Force but he was so young we're not sure if he was a son or grandson. Help proving anything would be much appreciated. :)

They make it seem like the whole family headed to KY. After crossing into KY they made camp one night. Two sons went off to hunt for dinner & caught something. One son laid down his gun to help clean their kill. After going to bed he remembered his loaded gun sitting outside. While trying to retrieve it in the dark it went off killing his father. Rene II was buried near their camp somewhere in KY.

son William Bailey La Force I have evidence to indicate this was her grandson, not a son---but as this list was made by someone else they just assumed he was her son. I think his father was one of the ones she said was killed defending the women and children.

William Bailey told his grandson that he and his mother took turns carrying his 3yr old baby brother who had died; they refuse to tell the Indians because they would have just made them leave him without being buried. When they camped for the ***ht they dug a shallow grave with their bare hands.

Agnes was over 50 years old and I don't think she had a 3 year old baby. Also, a land deed registered in Woodford Co left land to an Elizabeth La Force, daughter of William Bailey.

Rene, Jr was not a registered Tory but he was a Tory sympathizer.

This was because of their philosophy as nobility in the Divine Right of Monarchs and Nobility. I am sure this was instilled in him

I think son Barney was an actual Tory, although he is not on the official list of Tories that fought. I believe he moved to London

as there is no other record of him in Botetourt past 1782.

In 1898 a John La Force came to Botetourt Co. No La Forces were still living there and he lists his parents as being born in London and he in Amsterdam or viseversa. He may have come to claim an inheritance from his grandfather.

Agnes did not get her slaves back. William Bailey filed a Petition in 1814 on behalf of the La Force family but it did not result in any reimbursement.

The group above went back to Botetourt when released and did not migrate to KY until late 1780s and early 1790s--probably when Agnes died.

It is not known which of the sons shot Rene, Jr. and you will notice that none of them were with Agnes in the Captivity, not even Moncier and he was her youngest. One of John Mahan's sisters said there was a custom of leaving one of the family where they would be safe if the rest were killed so there would be someone to carry on the family name.

Nor is it known why all the boys went back to Botetourt--if they were with them on the trip out. Also missing are Zulina and Trephenah and their families. That would have left only one son-in-law and one daughter-in-law (if William Bailey's mother was Elizabeth Bailey La Force) not sons- and daughters- in -law as Agnes stated.

Agnes had two brothers (John and Robert) who were in KY in this timeframe so they probably went out in the same group as the La Forces.

There were 13 slaves. Two of their descendants, Arthur Thomas and Reita Smith have written me in their search for their "story" as well."

Another family story says he was accidentally killed when a member of the party dropped a gun as he and family were moving to Kentucky.
