About Renate Ornea

Renate Ornea (born Fried) and her sister Eva Vivian Somes (born Fried) were rescued from Prague in 1939 by the Barbican Mission to the Jews (BMJ), with the help of Nicholas Winton, one of the organizers of the Kindertransport.

Both appear in the film that is kept at the USHMM (https://collections.ushmm.org/search/catalog/irn1000675) which gave rise to a Czech TV documentary on the Barbican Mission (see https://english.radio.cz/new-doc-uncovers-mission-saved-scores-jewi...)..

The rescued children reunited in January 1989 in Chislehurst, Kent. On this occasion, they donated a bench with a plaque that reads “Rev. & Mrs. I.E. Davidson & Friends – gratefully remembered by all the BMJ children (68 of them rescued from Central Europe 1939).

Vera Barron (born Altmann), who was on the second flight on 8 March 1939, organized the book “Golden Memories 1939-1989)” . Both Renate and Eva contributed to the book with a short report on their lives and family on pages 28-29. The book has also some photographs.

There is also a book "For a Future and a Hope - the story of the houses of refugee in Chislehurst" written by Lucy Vyvyan Davidson the wife of the Mission's director, Reverend Isaac Emmanuel Davidson. Mrs. Davidson tells the story of the Mission´s effort to shelter the children. There are also some reports about some of the children.

The Barbican Mission to the Jews (BMJ), now Christian Witness to Israel keeps some files from some children.
