About Renne Allred, Jr.

Renne Allred, Jr., attorney, the son of Renne and Mary (Henson) Allred, was born on June 6, 1901, in Bowie, Texas. From the age of twelve to fourteen he attended Bowie Commercial College, or, as it was commonly referred to, "the Knowledge Box," where he learned typing and shorthand. At the age of fifteen he moved to Carthage and worked as a stenographer in the office of the superintendent of the Fort Worth and Denver Railway. Before becoming a court reporter in 1920 he worked in various cities. As a court reporter he read law under his brother, James Allred. He passed the Texas bar in 1925 and received his license to practice in 1926. From 1927 to 1928 he was prosecuting attorney of Montague County. He then moved to Henderson County to set up practice during the oilfield boom. He served as district judge of Rusk and Gregg counties from 1932 to 1934 and later practiced law in Dallas and Tyler.

From 1940 to 1954 Allred reached the height of his career with his appointment as attorney for the receiver of Texas Insolvent Insurance Company. His investigation of the first Texas insurance scandals led to closer regulation of insurance companies. After his tenure as a receiver he worked as a member of the law firm Allred and London in Bowie until 1961. He was a receiver for US Trust ICT Insurance Company from 1957 to 1960.

In addition to his duties as a lawyer he was active in his church. In 1959 he was elected the president of District 18 Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ). He was already serving the First Christian Church of Bowie as an elder and chairman of the board. Allred died on July 18, 1977, in Bowie, Texas, and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Velma (Bunch), and their only son.
