US Congressman. He was born in Albemarle County, Virginia, and was educated locally. On January 1, 1799, he married Martha Patsy Rhodes in Albemarle County, Virginia. The couple later moved to the State of Kentucky. He entered politics and he served as a Member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives from 1809 to 1811. He then served two terms in the Kentucky State Senate from 1816 to 1820, and again from 1824 to 1827. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected. A Jacksonian, he then served Kentucky's 10th District (Twentieth and Twenty-First Congresses) in the United States House of Representatives from 1827 to 1831. While serving in the United States Congress he was also the Chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Post Office Department representing the Twenty-First Congress. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the Twenty-Second Congress in 1830. After his term in the United States Congress expired on March 3, 1831, he was succeeded in office by United States Representative Christopher Tompkins. Following his retirement, he returned to private life. He passed away in Barren County, Kentucky, in 1838. His wife Martha passed away in 1856 and she is buried in the Wilson Cemetery #2 in Hiseville, Kentucky. Her husband's burial location has been lost to history but it is believed that he rests near his wife in this cemetery although he has no gravestone.
