From the Geneva Daily Times, Geneva, N.Y., Friday, September 19, 1941, page fifteen: "Robert Lawson Rose, the fourth son of Robert S. Rose bad been for a short time a merchant in Geneva. His first advertisement appeared in the Geneva Palladium of Oct. 18. 1828, "nearly opposite the Square and next door to Col. James Bogart's bookstore, dry goods, hardware and 500 lbs. of clean wool." Later he purchased land at Allen's Hill and married Almira, the daughter of Major Nathaniel Allen. Robert L. Rose was an acknowledged leader of the old Whig Party, and its representative to Congress from Ontario Co. for two terms prior to 1861. He later moved to Texas and died in Hagerstown, Maryland in 1877. Of the three sons of this marriage only the second Robert Selden, my grandfather, can be counted among the Geneva group. His uncles John and Henry had married sisters, Jane and Sarah Macomb, nieces of Gen. Alex. Macomb, but there were no children of these marriages."
