Thomas Tredwell, (grandfather of Thomas Treadwell Davis), a Representative from New York; born in Smithtown, Long Island, N.Y., February 6, 1743; was graduated from Princeton College in 1764; studied law; was admitted to the bar and began practice in Plattsburg, N.Y.; delegate to the Provincial Congress of New York in 1774 and 1775; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1776 and 1777; member of the State assembly 1777-1783; judge of the court of probate 1778-1787; served in the State senate 1786-1789; surrogate of Suffolk County 1787-1791; delegate to the State ratification convention in 1788; elected to the Second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James Townsend; reelected to the Third Congress and served from May 1791 to March 3, 1795; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1801; again a member of the State senate 1803-1807; surrogate of Clinton County 1807-1831; died in Plattsburg, Clinton County, N.Y., December 30, 1831; interment in a private burial ground in Beekmantown, N.Y.
