About Reps Osborne

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Osborne-8300

Reps's birth date is roughly 1723-1727. He was not on the Amelia Co. tithes list of 1738 but was on the next surviving list in 1743. thus, turned 16 during that time. His will was proved on June 6, 1808, so he probably died that spring.[1]

As a young boy he moved from Henrico (Chesterfield) County VA with his family up the Appomattox River to Prince George (soon to be Amelia) County. About 1746[2] he moved, probably with the Goode brothers (Mackerness, William, Philip, John and Edward), to the Roanoke River wilderness of Lunenburg County, where, in 1747, Mack Goode received a patent for over 1000 acres.[3] In 1752 Reps bought from Mack Goode 165 acres on both sides of Bluestone Creek for £5. In 1759 he received his own patent: 800 acres on Horsepen Creek, adjoining the Williams and Martins, about seven miles north of his home on Bluestone Creek.[4]

Reps was joined by (brother?) Daniel Osborne, who appeared on the tithes list with him in 1764. That year the two men purchased adjoining land on Bluestone and Moody creeks from their neighbor Francis Barnes: Reps 278 acres and Daniel 150 acres.[5] Two years later, Daniel sold his 150 acres to Reps[6] and apparently moved away.

The area became Charlotte County in 1764.

In 1764, Reps received patents to two more tracts of land: 385 acres about 12 miles to the north on the Middle Fork of the Meherrin River adjoining the Jones and Tomlinson and 334 acres on Moody Creek adjacent to the Barnes.[7]

Since he held onto his property, the name of his wife (or wives) is not known. She had died by 1795 when Reps began disposing of his land. [See Research Note below.]

On September 29, 1795, he sold 400 acres (half of his Horsepen Creek tract) to Christopher Diggs of Mecklenburg County [he was the only non-family member to whom Reps sold land], sons Jones and Reps Jr. witnessed the deed.[8] On April 3, 1797, he sold to his son Reps Jr. 349 acres on the east side of Moody Creek, bounded by the ridge between Moody and Bluestone creeks and southwest by ThomasGayle's land.[9] On June 17, 1797, he sold his 385-acre tract on the Middle Fork of the Meherrin River to son-in-law Solomon H. Elam, with sons Jones and Edward witnessing.[10] On February 28, 1798, he sold to his son Thomas Osborne 280 acres on Moody Creek located at the mouth of Rocky Branch and adjacent to Schoolhouse Branch and the Goodes, sons Jones and Edward witnessed.[11] Finally on March 21, 1801, he sold to his son-in-law Solomon H. Elam the remaining 400 acres on Horsepen Creek, with Reps Jr., nephew Daniel W. Osborne and William Dupree witnessing. [12]

On January 28 1803, Reps Osborne, almost 80 years old, made out his will. Of his remaining property, he willed to his son Philip the land on the west side of Moody Creek, where Philip then lived, and to son Jones Osborne the rest of the land, which included the home plantation. He appointed Reps Jr. and Philip along with Mack Goode to be his executors and asked Thomas Gayle, Henry Robertson and John Neal to witness the document. [13]

Reps died in the spring of 1808. His will was proved in the Charlotte County court on June 6, 1808, with Reps Jr. taking the oath of executor.[14]

Research Notes

Wife

Reps died after his wife, so there is no record of her in his will. Also, she had died by 1795 when Reps began disposing of his land so there is no record of a wife’s name in the deeds. She was probably born in the late 1720s.
He appears to have married into the Goode family: Samuel Goode who married Martha Jones dau. of Philip Jones. [This is a different Jones family from Reps’s paternal grandmother.] Samuel died in 1735 leaving two under age daughters who would be the right age. Reps named sons Samuel, Philip and Jones. His grandchildren include Mary Goode Osborne, Nancy Jones Osborne, Samuel Goode Osborne, and Edna Goode Elam. Unfortunately George Brown Goode’s “John Goode of Whitby” provides no clues. https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89062874243&view=1up&seq=...
Find-a-Grave says he married 1749 in Amelia Co. Ann Turpin, b.1729 dau. of Philip Turpin and Elizabeth Jones.[16] Family Search has Philip Turpin b.c.1655-1718 married Elizabeth Jones 1660-1718, [17] so not a fit. Neither provide sources.

This profile was originally created on 03 April 2011 through the import of Bwiki.ged as Edward Thomas Osborne "Repps" (1723 - 1808) apparently from Find-a-Grave[18] which had the same wording. It has been corrected to simply Reps Osborne. The 1808 Charlotte Co. VA will says Reps Osborne as do his deeds. He had brothers named Edward and Thomas.

Not a known son of Capt. Edward Osborne, V
