Who is Reuben Boston of Rev. War
Over the years of Boston research many relatives have tried to figure out if they were related to the Revolutionary War veteran Reuben Boston. In the early years a family was filed and approved by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The following is a list of the children filed by one of these early researchers. “Book,”Roster & Soldiers Tenn., Society Daughters of the American Revolution, 1894-1960” compiled Edythe Rucker Whitley, Registrar, Tenn. Soc., DAR 1961.
Boston, Reuben b. 1750 Orange Co., VA.; d. 1842 Anderson Co., Ky.
m. Sarah Hawkins, Sept. 13, 1782. She was b. 1758; d. 1812 Orange Co., Va.
Proof; Pension S.W. 16330 Rev. War; census of 1840 of Anderson Co., Ky. of pensioners.
Chds.
1. Fanny b. 1784 m. Wm. Bell Nov. 16, 1803.
2. Sarah b. 1787; d. 1880; m. William Davis Nov. 27, 1809.
3. Fountain C. B. 1787
4. Reuben H., b. 1785 (m. Mary Anderson daut. of Jacob Orange Co. VA 12-21-1809)
5. Simeon, b. 1781 (?)
6. William B., b. 1807 m. Sarah Powell 1831, Nov. 7.
7. Martha m. Richard Draper Nov. 12, 1816.
8. Archer b. 1779. (?)
9. Beverly, b. 1783.
Service: Private in Capt. Garland Burnley’s Company, Col. Francis Taylor’s Regt., Va. line. (etc.) In Battle of Camden.
Descendents: Katherine McKay Geiger (Mrs. H. J.) Nat. No. 314815
Carolyn E. Davis (Miss) Nat. No. 382874.
Ruby D. Berry (Mrs.W. M.) nat. No. 111095
Norwin Norris Gross (Mrs. Robert M. ) Nat. No. 356465”
There was another filing done in 31 Aug 1914 and accepted by national board 7 Oct 1914 which is probably one of the early ones. This was done by Mrs. Ruby Davis Berry wife of Walter M Berry national number 111095 her ancestor was child of Charles T Davis born 1859 and Caroline Alley. Charles was son of George W Davis born 1813 married Mary R Powell and George W.Davis was the son of William Tinsley Davis born about 1780 married Sarah Boston born abt 1788. Sarah was daughter of Reuben Boston. She states Reuben Boston was born 1750 but the tax and census say 1760 except 1830 census so I believe 1750 wrong and he died 1842 which is true for the Reuben in Kentucky. But as the following shows the father of Sarah Boston Davis lived all his life in Orange County Virginia and died by 1840 when his wife Elizabeth renounced her rights to his estate. Sarah’s husband is executor of estate inventory and Elizabeth Boston is listed on inventory. Also on the Daughters of American Revolution document the name of Elizabeth Bradley is listed as wife of Reuben and marriage 1778. These have been crossed out to put in Sarah Hawkins and marriage date of 13 Sep 1783 this is where the filing became in correct. I believe the person filing knew Elizabeth Bradley was correct ancestor of Sarah Boston Davis but the Daughters of American Revolution knew Reuben Boston the solider married Sarah Hawkins so they changed it. It is unclear who knew what then but it is clear if one reads all the following information that Sarah’s ancestor was not the Revolutionary War Veteran. Mostly to Sarah Boston marriage listed Reuben Boston as Bondsman and this was in 27 Nov 1809 (item 28 below). Revolutionary Reuben was in Kentucky by his own statement in 1809.
The problem with this filing is these are the children of a Reuben Boston of Orange County, Virginia but not the children of the Reuben Boston of Orange that served in the Revolutionary War. Some early researchers were not aware there were two Reuben Boston’s of Orange County, Virginia. Some ignored the problem and others tried to merge the two families. Both the Reuben Boston’s were born in 1760’s which further complications the issue. The early filers also ignored part of the statement by Reuben Boston himself in his pension records. The following is the part of statement Reuben Boston made for his pension: “ 4 Sep 1832 Pension Papers of Reuben Boston File #31116 v “upon being interrogated __ could I further state that I was born in Orange County, Virginia. where I resided during the revolutionary war __ while in service continued to live there until about the year 1792 when I remand to Kentucky and been the last thirty years where I now live. I __ __ of one man by whom I can prove some of service if alive and the Rev. William Penny __ ___ Hawkins by whom I can prove my character for veracity. I hereby relinquish all claims while I have to any __ or annuity from the __ state except the present and I am not a pensioner of the this state or any state. Witness my hand this 13 day of August 1832. R. Boston
State of Kentucky
Commonwealth of Kentucky Anderson county__ END OF STATEMENT
According to this statement Reuben Boston left for Kentucky about 1792 and remained there. The actual tax records of Kentucky , Fayette County show Reuben Boston appearing 24 Mar 1789 and so now we have the Reuben Bostons in separate locations. One is in Fayette Kentucky and the other is in Orange County, Virginia. We now have to identify each set of children. The following is a chart of what is happening where each Reuben lived as they and their descendants create records. Reuben Boston VA is the Reuben who remained in Orange County and Reuben Boston KY is the one who moved to Kentucky 1789 and is proven to be the Revolutionary War Veteran by his statement and his 1840 Census Anderson County, Kentucky which lists him as a Revolutionary Veteran.
