Notes for Alexander Joseph Grant: - From Ian White
Alexander Joseph Grant, Was born in Kensington, Middlesex. The son of Alexander Grant registered as a Military Outfitter.
In the1871 census he had set up home with his new wife Mary Willcocks, also living at the same address, was his father Alex by then a widower and his cousin John Grant, a publisher.
Whilst Alexander was working in Whitechapel in the Eastend of London, he got the calling to be a missionary, this was after he had become a widower himself , leaving his young daughter Marianne Grace with his in laws the Willcocks, He set off to South Africa, where he eventually rose to be an Archdeacon.
He remarried a Harriette Bedford Sheperston nee Webb, a widow of Frederick Sheperston the brother of Theophilus Sheperston, a man associated with the inclusion of Natal and the Transvaal in to the British Empire, Frederick and Harriette had a son Theophilus.
Alexander and Harriette had three more children Constance, Alice, Theodore 1891.
Alexander died on the 7th January 1915 in the Free Hospital, East London, Cape Provence, South Africa. He had been suffering for some 7 months and six days with Internal Obstruction and Asthenia, this being a medical term for abnormal physical weakness or lack of energy.
