Rev. Christian Streit was licensed to preach by the Synod of Pennsylvania in 1769; served ten years in Easton, Pennsylvania; Chaplain of the 3rd Virginia Regiment during the War for Independence; pastor in Charleston, South Carolina 1778-1780; taken prisoner by the British and held until exchanged in 1782; pastor at New Holland, Pennsylvania 1782-1785; pastor at Winchester, Virginia from 1785 to 1812.
Christian was the first Lutheran pastor in Winchester, Va. His diary of his early ministry is available in the book, the History of the Lutheran Church in Winchester. He preached througout the Shenandoah Valley both in German and English to the early settlers along the valley pike. He is buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Winchester and a statue of him stands in front of the restored wall of his original Lutheran Church. His accomplishments are also noted in the Musuem of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester.
