Rev. Daniel Maude was baptised in Halifax, Yorkshire, 9 Oct 1586, son of "Edward Mawd preacher of the word." Schoolmaster & minister from Halifax, Yorkshire, who came to Massachusetts Bay in 1635 on the "James" of Bristol. (Daniel Maude & Rev. Richard Mather shared the ministerial duties aboard the James during its crossing in 1635.) First settled in Boston: later moved to Dover NH. Died between 17 Jan 1654[/5?] (date of will) & 26 Jan 1655/6 (probate of will).

  • (1) by 1643, Mary Bonner (as "Marie Bonner maid servant to our teacher John Cotton," she had been admitted to Boston church on 3 Aug 1634).

Rev. Daniel Maude arrived from England with Richard Mather in the "James," on the 3d of June, 1635, a little after the school had been opened. He had been educated at Emanuel College, Cambridge, and was a student there while John Wilson and Ezekiel Rogers were at Christ's. Wilson took his first degree the year before Maude, and they two are the oldest Cambridge graduates who came to New England. At the time he became our Head Master he was about fifty years old. He was admitted to the First Church, Oct. 25,1635, — and admitted freeman May 25,1636. Mr. Savage is mistaken in thinking that the customary token of respect is omitted in the record: for he appears as "Mr. Danicll Maude." It has been suggested that he sympathized with Wheelwright. But he was not one of the signers of the "Remonstrance," — and, when, in 1642, the Church in Dover, N. II., needed a minister, and sent to tho Boston Elders to desire their help, these elders named Mr. Maude, who went there in 1643, and ministered to that congregation, till he died in 1655. He left no children. Mather says he had been a minister in England: Hubbard, that he was "a good man, of a serious spirit and of a peaceable and quiet disposition." His salary at Dover was forty pounds a year.

From Sketch of Dover, New Hampshire

"The people were thus left sometime without preaching but at last in 1642, they obtained Mr DANIEL MAUD, whom they enjoyed many years for their minister; he was a good man, of a serious spirit and a quiet and peaceable disposition. He continued with them till his death." There is an order in the town records, dated August 1, 1642, " for Mr Maud and his wife to enjoy the house in which they then lived during their lives, provided he continue as Teacher of Pastor, if it please God to call him to it." His name is mentioned several times in the record till 1651, and his salary was then 50 pounds per annum.

Mr Maud came to this country as early as 1635, and was admitted a freeman by the Mass. Colony, October 25, 1635. He settled in Boston, and was a schoolmaster there several years. He died in Dover, in 1655. He had a wife, who name was Mary, but left no children in this country.

The James left King's Road in Bristol on 23 May 1635 with her master, John Taylor, along with the Angel Gabriel, the Elizabeth (the Bess), the Mary and the Diligence. The James and the Angel Gabriel stayed together while the three faster and smaller boats went on to Newfoundland. The Angel was wrecked off the coast of Maine, but the James made it into Boston, torn and shredded.

  • Fower, Barnabas
  • Armitage, Thomas
  • Mather, Richard
  • Atherton, Humphrey (brother-in-law to Nathaniel Wales)
  • Smith, John

Rev. Richard Mather kept a journal of the voyage, and I believe most of the above names may be found listed in it. The ship, of 220 tons, carried "one hundred passengers, honest people of Yorkshire", so this is but a small portion of the names.
