About Rev Elias Davis Johnson
Rev Elias Davis Johnson was the son of Samuel Johnson and his wife Sarah Davis, daughter of Henry Davis who served in the Revolutionary War. His mother named him for her brother, Rev Elias Davis, a Baptist minister in 1860 Lumberton, NC. His siblings were brothers Daniel and Ewen and sister Elizabeth Gainor Allen.
Elias was a well known Baptist minister pastoring many churches in the area. He was at Hickory Grove Baptist in Bladen county for thirty years before he organized Great Marsh in 1871 and was their first pastor. This portrait of him hung in Great Marsh church. His family is buried in this cemetery.
On 1 Dec 1849, Elias became the husband of Sarah Caroline Humphrey, the eldest child of John and Sophia [Powers] Humphrey. This union was blessed with William Samuel, Joel Matthew, John Henry, Edwin Ernest, Elias Gaston, Sallie Jane Howard, Hattie C, Ewen James, Charity Amanda Fisher, Charlie L, and Daniel Riley Humphrey.
Elias was a landowner outside St Pauls in the Great Marsh community. He was a farmer as well as a gospel minister. His home was near Great Marsh church. Some of his descendants followed him into the Baptist ministry.
