In Kiantone. March 28th. Rev. E. M. SPENCER, in 69th year of his age. Although the deceased has resided in this vicinity but a few years, yet his striving eloquence and untiring zeal as a Christian Minister had rendered him quite conspicuous and extensively known. Since he has been among us he has labored principally in our smaller churches; and yet, in those small communities were heard sermons from the aged and devoted pastor, which for forcible reasoning and thrilling appeals to the consciences of men are not often surpassed in our city pulpits. It may be said to have been a passion with him to preach the gospel, and he gave evident proofs of his ministry, according to the Saviour's ___ ... he commenced the study of law with his brother, Gen. Spencer, of Canastota, Madison county; and if he had not relinquished his purpose might have been as well known in that profession as his distinguished brothers.
But deeply impressed with the importance of preaching the Gospel, he soon discontinued his legal studies, and entered upon that course of life which he faithfully pursued until his death. In his early Ministry, he was connected with the Baptist denomination, but afterwards became a minister of the Presbyterian Church and died in that connexion [sic]. For several years, he united the business of teaching with the discharge of his duties as a Christian Minister, and was for some time Principal of Middlebury Academy in the County of Wyoming. Whilst under his charge, that institution acquired great celebrity—In his latter years Mr. S. experienced deep afflictions, which were borne with Christian fortitude.—[Dem.] Source: Jamestown Journal, Jamestown, New York, 6 Apr 1855
Early in his ministerial career, the Reverend was employed by the Connecticut Congregational Missionary Society on the Holland Land Purchase. Early on, he was installed pastor of a Presbyterian Church in Attica, Wyoming Co, New York, by Rev John Spencer, a pioneer Congregational & Presbyterian missionary also employed by the Connecticut Congregational Missionary Society from Hartford, founder of more than 50 churches on the Holland Purchase prior to his death in 1826. John Spencer is buried in West Sheridan Cemetery, Chautauqua County. ~ From FAB member #49053915
