Biography

Ephraim Wheaton born in 1639 married Mary Mason in 1683. In 1704 Ephraim became associate with Elder Luther of the First Baptist Church of Swansee. At Elder Luther's death in 1716 Ephraim became the sole pastor of the church. His minestry was eminentlyl sucessful and the church was highly prosperous. According to the records one hundred were added to the church membership. Ephraim died in April 1734. On his burial stone, "Here Lyeth buried Y body of Mr. Ephraim Wheaton, Elder fo Ye First Church of Swansee, who having fatihfully served God & his generations in Ye Gospel fo Ye space of thriry years, fell asleep in Jesus with a sure and certain hope of a florious Resurrection to Immortal Life.

The First Baptist Church of Swansea now has a pastor Dr. Charles K. Hartman. The church is located at 21 Baptistt Street in Swansea, MA. In the fall of 2004 I attended a Sunday service at this church with Charles.

In May of 2003 I wrote to the church looking for historical information. The following letter was received from Dr. Hartman:

Your letter has found its way to my desk. I am the pastor of the First Batist Church in Swansea, Mass. This congregation was founded in 1663 by John Myles. Ephraim Wheaton was our third pastor after Samuel Luther died in 1716. This year we celebrate our 340th anniversary.

The building we now occupy was built in 1848. It is our fourth building in a third location. The original 1667 building was burned in the King Phillip War in 1675. Thje second building was built near Tyler's Point, Swansea in 1679. A third building was built at Tyler's Point and then moved over the ice on the Palmer River to N. Swansea in 1717 (Our present site). This building, the one your ancestor would have known, was torn down in 1845 to build the 1848 building.

Our church records go bac to 1649 when john Myles founded the First Baptist Church in Wales (Swansea, Wales near Liston). He came here after the restoration of the monarachy in England, We are the third oldest surviving Baptist congregation in North America, the grand parent institution for Brown University and a congregation that represents and inflow of Baptist experience separate from the Roger Williams and John Clark traditrions. We are associated now with the American Baptist Chjurches, USA and the american Baptist Churches of massachusetts. We have two main collections of ancient redords. In the Joh Hay Library at Brown, we have the original book wrttten by John Myles. The Massachusetts Genelogical and Historical Society own another collection which parallels the Myules material.

We are today a small but bital church witha a range of geneeration and a joyful spirit. We are proud that we have a heritage that helped bring real religious freedom to this nation and understand ourselves as founding contributors to the American experience.

We are always intered in talking aboutr our history and will be happyu to provide as much information as we have in hand to those who are interested.

Sincerely,

The Rev. Dr. Charles Hartman, pastor FBC in Swansea, 21 Baptist Street, Swansea, MA. 02777 Area 508 379 9728
