Rev. G. Edgar Hertzler, age 99 years, formerly of Harrisburg, passed away at the Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, Pa. Rev. Hertzler will be remembered for his dedication to the churches and communities in which he served. Born in Lancaster, Pa. he attended the Lancaster Boys High School; graduated from Lebanon Valley College and later served 24 years as a trustee of the college and was honored with a Doctor of Divinity degree. He also received the Degrees of Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Divinity from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. He was also granted the degree of Master of Sacred Theology from Gettysburg Seminary. He organized the first volunteer chaplaincy service in the Harrisburg Hospital. He served as President of the Interdenominational Leadership Training School of Harrisburg. He was also past president of the PA State Pastor's Conference. During the 1940's he served as a deputy clerk of the Dauphin County Courts; was a volunteer counselor in the homes of juvenile dilinquents persons who appeared before the court. His first assignment as ano ordained minister was to the Lebanon Circuit. In 1937, he camie to the 29th Street United Brethren Church, where he served for 25 years. The church was a mission church when he was appointed and during his tenure, the membership grew to 600. the church named his Pastor Emeritus when he retired. For 4 years, he served as Pastor of St. Paul's Church in Elizabethtown. He also served as the chairman of the United Fund Drive for the Borough of Elizabethtown, Lancaster County, Pa., as well as chaplain in the Masonic Homes two months each year. The last seven years the Otterbein Church in Harrisburg. After retirement, he became the chaplain/counselor in the Neill Funeral Home for 25 years and thereafter, conducted telephone ministry to shut-in and lonely people. He was a member of the Abraham Treichler Lodge #682, in Elizabethtown, and past chaplain of the Harrisburg Tall Cedars of Lebanon, #43. Surviving are two children, Georgia Ann Bartholomew of Mechanicsburg, Pa. and Dr. Paul Hertzler of Leesburg, Florida; two step-children, Carol Fliesher in Imperial, Pa. and Paul Mickey of Florida; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and his sister, Mary Boger, of New Jersey. Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church at 29th & Derry Streets, Harrisburg. Burial at Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsburg.
