About Rev Hugh Adams
GEDCOM Source
Hugh Adams was the son of John and Avis Adams of Boston, Mass. On 20 November 1684, John Adams was one of a group of men for whom a surety was provided, this implying that they were recent immigrants. Some of the men in the group were from Scotland, and perhaps the remainder were from there as well. Thus, it is possible that Hugh was born in Scotland.
Hugh graduated from Harvard College in 1697 as a minister, and the following year went to South Carolina where he preached until 1706. He was married in 1701, perhaps in South Carolina, to Susanna Winborn. After returning from the South, he had a long career back in New England, first in Massachusetts, then in Durham, New Hampshire.
There is no inscribed marker for Hugh in this cemetery, but Stackpole and Meserve in their History of Durham find it likely that he is buried here. His family owned this property before the Sullivans bought it, and his daughter-in-law, Phebe Adams, is buried in this cemetery with an inscribed marker.
