Rev. James Sproat D.D., was born April 11 1721 in Scituate, Massachusetts and died October 18, 1793 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Ebenezer Sproat and Elizabeth E. Hawes. He married Sarah Smith, born 1721 died Nov 14 1793, Philadelphia Pennsylvania, daughter of Major William Smith whose father was Chief Justice William Smith Governor of Tangiers appointed by Charles II.
James and Sarah (Smith) Sproat were the parents of: John Sproat who married Margaret Darmon; Sarah Sproat who married Joseph Spencer; Hannah Sproat who married Isaac Keith; Major William Sproat who married Maria Thompson; Olive Sproat and Annie Sproat.
Rev. James Sproat of this artile was a Chaplin in the Philadelphia General Hospital during the Rev. War. The Rev. James Sproat D.D. of Scituate, Mass., was ordained over the Fourth Society August 23 1743 and dismissed Oct 18, 1768 was soon installed over the Second Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, Penna. Dr. Sproat was educated at Yale College where he graduated in 1741. He became a subject of religous exercises during his connection with that instution under the discourse delivered by the celebrated Gilbert Tennant, his predecessor of Philadelphia. Dr. Sproat remained in his new charge until his death which occured Oct 18, 1793 age 71 years. He died of yellow fever along with his wife and several children. In each of his two charges he spent 25 years and was greatly and deservedly esteemed in both as a man and Christian minister. Doctor Asabel Green late president of Princeton college succeded him and preached his funeral.
Note: Rev. Sproat was first interred at Second Presbyterian Church Burial Ground (Arch Street) and was removed in 1867 to Laurel Hill Cemetery.

During the epidemic of which he became one of the last victims, he refused to leave the city while one of his congregations remained. Also of Sarah Sproat, his wife, of St. George Manor, Long Island, who died November 14, 1793. Also of their children, Annie Sproat, who died September 22, 1793, in the 26th year of her age. William Sproat, late captain in the third regiment Pennsylvania line in the Revolutionary War, who died October 18, 1793, in the 36th year of his age. He was at Valley Forge, and in the battles of Brandy-wine, Germantown and Monmouth. Maria Sproat, his wife, of Maryland, who died October 17, 1793, aged 26. John Sproat, a merchant of this city, who died November 2, 1795, aged 29. Olive Sproat, who died after a life of piety an usefulness, January 26, 1836, in the 84th year of her age. Also of Col.
