John Atkinson was born September 18, 1755, in Cumberland County, Virginia. He lived there until he was grown and then moved to Pittsylvania County, Virginia, where he was living when he volunteered in September, 1780, for service under Capt. Joseph Morton and Col. Williams. During this first tour of duty, they marched to Island Ford on Dan River where they remained until Green`s army at Halifax moved toward the interior and Cornwallis moved his army toward Hillsborough.

In January 1781, all men were classified for military purposes in Pittsylvania County, and he was drafted to serve three months. He was under Capt. Joseph Morton, Col. Peter Perkins and Gen. Stephens. They joined Gen. Greens army at Haw River, while they were marching to Guilford Courthouse and was wounded in the right hand in this battle. He was given a discharge for this three months of services. Edward Nunelley, a Revolutionary pensioner from Hickman County, Tennessee, said he had heard John Atkinson, a preacher of the gospel, preach after he was wounded. John Atkinson married Mary Armistead November 6, 1777. They were married by Parson McCrea.
Marys brother, Thaddeus Armistead, made a deposition that his sister had married John Atkinson at his house. He said his sister kept house for him until she married, since their parents were dead. He also said John Atkinson was a Baptist preacher for 50 years before his death. John Atkinson died April 2, 1837, and his widow, Mary, applied for a pension. She stated in the application that she was born February 17, 1758. Their children were: Polly Clark, Anna Hogan, Betsey Atkinson, Fanny Hogan, Sally Ham, Judith Short, John Atkinson, Samuel Atkinson, Armistead Atkinson, Jessy Atkinson and Dossy Atkinson. John Atkinson is buried in a small graveyard between Highway 96-W and the Old Charlotte Road. A small cabin said to have been his house is still standing.
