About Rev. John Collins
The Reverend John Collins(336) was born in 1633. He died on Dec 3 1687. The Reverend John Collins was born in England, and came to this country with his father. He was educated at Harvard, graduating in 1649, and then went to Edinburgh, Scotland, to study for the clergy. He never returned to America.
He served as one of General Monck's personal chaplins in 1659 and accompanied him and his army on his march from Scotland to London in 1659, an action that was instrumental in bringing about the restoration of the Stuart monarchy the following year.
Although named as one of the "silenced ministers," he succeeded Thomas Mallory as pastor of the congregational church in Lime Street, London. He was described by a contemporary as "a good preacher, and a man of catholic spirit." Cotton Mather, in his History of New England," discusses him and his virtues at length.
There is an article on the Reverend John Collins in the Dictionary of National Biography.
