Reverend John Erasmus Philipps was born on 7 May 1863 at Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales. He was the son of Reverend James Philipps and Susan Eliza Tombs. He married Margaret Louisa Everard ffolkes, daughter of Reverend Henry Edward Browne ffolkes and Sophia Louisa Everard, on 4 May 1888 at Register Office, The Strand, Chelsea, London, England. He died on 3 May 1923 at age 59.

He was Domestic Chaplain to Lord Barnard. He graduated with a Master of Arts (M.A.). He was the Vicar at Staindrop, Darlington, County Durham, England. He was the Rector at Cockfield, County Durham, England.
