About Rev. John Smalley
"The Reverend John Smalley D.D., Yale 1757, was the first pastor of the New Britain parish of Farmington, a Congregational Church ( now part of the city of New Britain, Ct). He had been prepared for college in his native Lebanon, Conn. by Dr. Wheelock."
He was one of the first Trustees of Dartmouth College--Oct 1770.
"Of the seven who did attend the original meeting (of the trustees of Dartmouth), four the five Nutmeggers were ardent Revolutionists when the time came. The Rev. Smalley was not, althought his opposition to the cause was philosophic.."On the general question respecting the present contest between
America and the Parent state" Pres. Ezra Stiles of Yale noted in his diary of N ov 24, 1774," ( Smalley) is for passive Obedience and non resistance. I believe it is partly from a conscientious Persuasion that Passive Obedience in civil Things is the Apostolic Doctrine".
From an article in the" Valley News "Vermont, Oct 1970, about the 200th anniversary of the newly created Dartmouth 200 years earlier.
