Services Held Friday For Local Pastor.
Funeral services were held Friday for the Rev.Lee C.Phillips,86,
of Briceville Rt.2.who died of a stroke.He was a patient at Lake City
Nursing and Convalescent Home for nearly three years before his dead.
Mr.Phillips was an active Baptist minister in this area from 1927 until his
retirement in 1955 when he sustained a stroke which left him partially paralyzed.
He was the pastor of Free Communion Baptist Church at Stainville at the time.
During his years in the ministry,he served as pastor for several churches in Anderson County,Scott and Roane Counties.
His first church was the old Minersville Baptist Church near Briceville.
Aside from his work in the ministry,Mr.Phillips also was a coal miner,working in the mines from he was a boy until his retirement.
He was born in Stainville community and was a life-long resident of the Briceville area.
He was a member of Walden View Baptist Church before his illness,he was an active gardener and farmer and enjoyed hunting and fishing as pasttimes.Mr.Phillips was preceded in death by one daughter,Mrs.Alice Stocks,who died in 1970.He leaves his wife,Mrs.Haley Wilson Phillips,two sons,Clarence Phillips of Nashville and Ervin Phillips of Briceville, a daughter,Mrs.Ethel West of Briceville, 18 grandchildren,43 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.two brothers,John Phillips of Briceville and Charlie Phillips of Lake City,and six sisters,Mrs.Susie Bunch of Lake City,Mrs.Pauline Phillips of Clinton,Mrs.Haley Hatmaker of Andersonville,Mrs.Annie Bunch of Coalfield and Mrs.Lizzie Patterson of Harriman.
Funeral services were held at Laurel Grove Baptist Church and were conducted by the Rev.Edwin Phillips and the Rev.Henry Duncan.Burial was in Laurel Grove Cemetery.
