REV. PETER LINDSAY Died Suddenly at his home In Rochester, Born in Scotland
At his home in Rochester, Sunday occurred the death of the Rev. Peter Lindsay, D. D. He preached in the morning as usual in the North Presbyterian Church and complaining of being ill, he took to his bed and had a sinking spell. Before physicians could be summoned he had expired. The deceased was born in Hoxboroughshire, Scotland, March 31,1851 and his early years were spent on the banks of the River Tweed. At the age of 12 he became a shepherd boy on the Cheviot Hills and followed that business about 8 years. When he was 18 years old his mother died and he determined to sturdy for the ministry. With this in mind he came to the United States when he was 20 years old. Locating in central New York. He worked his way through Whitestown Seminary and later for a time attended Madison University. In Whitestown it was common practice for him to hold open air meetings at the street corners on Sunday. He entered Auburn Theological Seminary and after being graduated in 1881 he had a Presbyterian Church in Seneca Falls. He went to Rochester in December 1883 to organize what since has been known as the North Presbyterian Church, of which until the day of his death he was pastor. He had been in Utica several times since his residence in Rochester and on one occasion was speaker at the annual banquet of the Whitestown Seminary Association. Dr. Lindsey married Cornelia Randolph Peck of Owego, May 31,1883. She and two sons now in Hobart College and one daughter, a student at Mt. Holyoke College survive.
