About Rev. Philemon Philip Larimore, Sr.
Philemon and his family were in Rockingham County (or Guilford Co. as it was known until 1785) by the 1780s, probably as early as 1782.
His first purchase of 79 acres on Stones Fork of Wolf Island Creek in the northeast corner of Rockingham Co. was made in 1787.

Philemon (called Philemon, Phillip, and Phillip, Sr. in the records) was born in Maryland of a Larimore branch that settled in the Talbot/Queen Anne Co. areas as early as 1650. Formally, he was probably called Philemon most of his life, and informally Phillip.
Family tradition has been written by descendants from different branches that say his children were born in Maryland between 1760 and 1775, but where in Maryland has not been disclosed. The Colonial records of Maryland show there were several Larimore families living up and down the Eastern Shore during that time period, but only one "Phillip" has been found in any of those records: On the 29th of April 1773, a Philip Laramore was one of the witnesses to the Will of Agnes Peters in Queen Anne's Co. No relationship between Philip & Agnes Peters was shown. Nor, of course, can we be at all certain that this was our ancestor Philemon/Phillip Larimore, Sr.
Philemon Larimore was probably of Scots or Scots-Irish descent. There is no proof of this but the areas in which he settled and the ancestry of the name Larimore would suggest this, as would family tradition.
No record has been found of Philemon having served in the American Revolution. If he was a second or third generation American, his loyalties may have been with the Colonial cause, but many of the Scots-Irish were of the Tory persuasion.
What prompted Philemon to leave Maryland is not known. No records have been found about Philemon and his move west.
Philemon and his family left a much better trail of records in North Carolina. Philemon and his family were in Rockingham County (or Guilford Co. as it was known until 1785) by the 1780s, probably as early as 1782.
His first purchase of 79 acres on Stones Fork of Wolf Island Creek in the northeast corner of Rockingham Co. was made in 1787. He was not the only Larimore in the area at the time which might explain why he moved there from Maryland. Perhaps those other Larimores were relatives.
For the 13 years from the purchase of his Wolf Island Creek land until he wrote his Will in 1800, Philemon Larimore, Sr left several records. In 1796, Philemon was excused from paying poll taxes for he was now "supposed to be 60 years old." In 1800, he appeared in the census of Rockingham Co. His Will named his wife Mary and his children as Memory Ward, Richard Larimore, Mary Strader, Caty Milby, Phillip Larimore & James Larimore. This Will was produced in Court in Feb. 1801, so Philemon had died by this time.
Also in 1800, Philemon transferred 100 acres of his Wolf Island Creek land to his youngest son, James.
By the time Philemon Larimore, Sr. died in Rockingham Co., NC, all of his children were married and had children of their own. Philemon's wife Mary is suspected to have died by late 1804 when the last of Philemon's children started to depart for Green Co., KY.

Note: This parcel (cemetery location) appears to be part of the 41 acres on Wolf Island Creek her son owned. It also appears the Larimore children & their families left the area by 1807, after the death of their parents.
