Rev Pierre Robert II

Pierre Robert (at that time pronounced Roe-bear) was the first of our ancestors to come to the new world, America. He was born in the Swiss Jura at St. Imier, the son of Daniel and Marie Robert, and was baptized on February 3, 1656.

    Records of the Catholic Bishop of Basle, Switzerland, show that his parents, his grandfather (Guillaume Robert), and several uncles and other relatives arrived there in April 1623. The record does not show where they originated, but it is thought they came either directly from France, or from France by way of Wales.

   Daniel Robert's ancestors had lived in Wales and received a knighthood from the Welch ruler, thus the motto and coat of arms. This may also account for the occasional Welch pronunciation of the name, Roe-burt. The descendants of Christopher Robert, who founded Robert College in Constantinople, claim the same coat of arms used by Pierre Robert, indicating Christopher was also from the line of Daniel and Marie.

  St. Imier was located in the Urguel Valley, only a few miles from the French border, and was known for its tolerance in accepting religious refugees from less friendly areas. At that time France was not at all tolerant of the Huguenot movement.

    When he was eighteen, (1674), Pierre Robert left home to study at the University of Basle in preparation for the professions. The University became one of the chief centers of the Reformation Movement in Switzerland. During the same year, he married Jeanne Braye of Basle. Their son Pierre Robert Jr. was born a year later and was  baptized on May 9, 1675 in the French Church (Calvinist).

He was the first Huguenot minister in America. He was the first rector of St. James Anglican Church, although it is unclear whether he was ordained as such since there was no Anglican Bishop in America at the time.

The first Huguenot church built in Charleston is still standing in a good state of preservation at this day (1946) even though it is more than two centuries old. On one of its inner walls may be seen a tablet placed there by some of the descendants of Pierre Robert with this inscription (Pasteur Pierre Robert - French Santee, So. Carolinia - 1656 - 1715." )

Descendants of Jehan Robert leading up to the Reverend Pierre Robert. In 1686 Pierre became the first of our ancestors to leave Switzerland and lead his family to America to begin a new life. This information indicates that our Roberts family ancestors were already in Switzerland many years prior to the "Wars of Religion" in France (1562-1598).

South Carolina's recorded history begins in the mid 1500s, when Europeans first arrived, though the area had been inhabited long before then. The Cherokee Nation was prominent in the area at the time that Europeans first arrived. Even though the French and Spanish were attracted to the coast of South Carolina in the 16th century, it was the English who established the first sustained European settlement, near present-day Charleston.

The earliest Robert family members established their homes primarily in the Beaufort District and Berkeley County South Carolina areas and various other French and British settlements in the state. Future generations saw migrations to many parts of the country with a large representation in Florida and other southern states. The first indication of the name change (Robert to Roberts) occurs in the mid 1700's with the family of John Robert.

Pierre Robert and Jeanne Brayne are my biological maternal 8th great grandparents. Their religion is listed as French Huguenot.

In the register at the old Huguenot Church in Basel, Switzerland is the record of his ordination on 19 Feb 1682, and also the baptism of his son Pierre, Jr in 1675. He came to SC in 1686 with his wife and son and a colony of French Huguenots which landed in Beaufort, SC then moved farther north to Santee, St. James Parish, called French Santee to distinguish it from English Santee, St. Stephen's Parish. These were on the south side of Santee, about 60 miles above Charleston, SC. From time of landing in 1686 until 1710, Pierre Robert was minister to the colony, and is supposed to have been the first Huguenot minister in the whole of South Carolina.

Pierre Robert is the son of Daniel Robert and wife Marie Petremand (b:c1645). Daniel and family first moved to France then to Switzerland about 1650 to escape religious persecution. Daniel Robert was born Abt. 1630 near Aberystwyth, Wales and died 1680 in Switzerland. He was the son of William Robert (b:c1598) and unknown wife of Wales.

Pierre Roberts 1656
Pierre (Peter) ROBERTs was born in St. Imier, Switzerland in 1656. He was the son of Daniel and Marie Robert who were French Huguenots. He was baptized on Feb. 3, 1656 in the Reformed Evangelical Parish of St. Imier. In 1674 he married Jeanne BRAYE, daughter of Jehu and Susanne Braye, of Basel, Switzerland. Pierre Robert is reported (unconfirmed) to have graduated as a physician at St. Etienne. There are some references to him in Swiss records as "Doctor," although this may have been an ecclesiastical title. He studied at the University of Basel in 1674 as a student of philosophy, and was again a student from 1681-1685. The Reverend Pierre Robert was said to have been the pastor of a Waldensian church at Basel. The Robert family was originally from Wales and was then spelled RHOBERT. Due to religious persecution they left their native land and went to France then Switzerland. After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, Pierre Robert, now a minister, was forced to leave Europe with thousands of other French Protestants. With his wife and his son, Pierre Jr., Pierre Robert immigrated to Craven County, South Carolina in 1686 in the group led by Captain Philip Gendron. They first settled in the Beaufort District, then moved further north, and settled in French Santee of St. James Parish, South Carolina. The Lord Proprietors granted lands to the immigrants on the condition of an annual payment of a penny an acre. They were also allowed their longed for religious freedom. In 1696, Pierre Robert petitioned for naturalization in South Carolina, named his parents as Daniel and Marie Robert and gave St. Imier, Switzerland as his place of birth. Pierre Robert is reported to have received a land grant for 500 acres in South Carolina. It appears Pierre Robert assisted Bartholomew Gaillard and Eli Horry in the laying out of the plan of Jamestown and that he was a purchaser of Lot #7 valued at 40 shillings. He was reported to have been the first person in the settlement that owned a horse imported for his special use to transport him to remote areas of the countryside to hold religious services. In 1699 the Church had a membership of 111. The Reverend Pierre Robert served as head minister of the Huguenot Church at French Santee until 1715, when he resigned due to poor health. The Reverend Philip de Richebourg, formerly a Roman Catholic, who had converted to the Anglicized Huguenot Church, succeeded him. The Reverend Pierre Robert died about 1715 in French Santee, South Carolina at the age of 59. It is likely he was buried in the French Santee area, although the exact burial site is unknown. The Reverend Pierre Robert was the first French Huguenot minister in the Carolinas and was for many years the spiritual leader of his flock there. Memorial tablets honoring Reverend Pierre Robert and several other members of the Robert family can be seen in the Huguenot Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
