About Rev. Richard Kidder Meade

Charlottesville, VA., November 17. – The Rev. R.K. Meade quietly passed away at his residence, in this city, at half-past 7 o’clock this morning, in the 81st year of his age. He was born in Clarke county, Va., October 31, 1812, and was the second son of the late Bishop Meade, of Virginia. After receiving a good education, he entered the ministry of the Episcopal Church, and came to Charlottesville in the spring of 1836, where he took charge of Christ Episcopal church, remaining its pastor until 1868, when he resigned, and was succeeded by the late Dr. J.S. Hauckel. For many years past he has been the principal of the Piedmont Female Seminary, an advanced school for young ladies, which for years has enjoyed an excellent reputation. For several years past he has been in delicate health, and most of the work of his school has been done by his family. His last wife preceded him to the grave about two years ago. A family of nine children survive him, two of whom are Episcopal ministers – the Rev. William H. Meade, of Roanoke, and the Rev. Frank Meade, of Hinton. The deceased minister was a fine scholar and when in his prime a forcible preacher. Deceased was well known by every resident of this city, both male and female, by whom he was beloved and highly respected. He was also well known all over the State. His funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon from Christ’s church, in this city, of which he was so long rector.

Note: That is NOT the portrait of anyone whose life span was bet 1812 and 1892, unless he was going to a costume party.
