About Rev. Samuel Newton
Samuel Newton, m. Sarah Lee. He was a Baptist preacher, serving as pastor of Wells' Chapel Baptist Church which was organized in 1756 (among the first missionary Baptist churches in Duplin Co., NC). He served in this capacity until his death about 1783 during the Rev. War. Until 1835, the church was called Bull Tail Meeting House, probably because of nearby Bull Tail Creek.
