Samuel Rice was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania in 1804. he died December 19, 1885, at the age of 81 years, 6 months, 9 days near Disco, Illinois, at the home of his son George. He married Frances Strickler. In 1866 or 1864, he moved to Wayne County, Ohio, with wife and two youngest children. They had eleven children. He is buried in Durham Cemetery, five miles west of Disco. Grandfather, (Samuel Rice), with the two youngest children moved to Illinois to Hancock County near Disco, where his oldest son lived and lived near them for some time. Mary was married and Cyrus in medical school. He then made his home among his sons and when son George built a new house, he asked to have a room there and called that home. He made several trips back East and went alone.

To the Honorable the Justices of the Orphans Court of Fayette County the Petition of Christina Rice relict of John Rice, late of Bullskin Township Fayette County Deceased ______________ Humbly settethforth That the said John Rice lately died leaving the following Minor Children "viz" Samuel, aged thirteen years and upward. Catherine, aged nine years and upward, Jacob, aged five years and upward & David, aged four years and upward. And request the Honorable Court would be pleased to appoint Guardians or a Guardian to take charge of their persons & Estates during their Minority. And your Petitioner shall pray. 12th April 1818 Christiana Rise

The petition of Samuel Rice one of the sons of John Rice late of this County decd. Respectfully presents. That he is a minor above the age of fourteen years & wishing to make choice of a guardian to take care of his person & estate and therefore requests your honor to appoint Henry Strickler for the purpose aforesaid being in duty bound he will pray Samuel Rice

Samuel Rice was a farmer and also a minister in the River Brethren Church, an off-shoot of the Mennonite Church, in Pennsville, Bullskin Township, Pennsylvania. In 1844 he was a school director in Pennsville, Pennsylvania. The Mennonites had a church and graveyard on Mounts Creek, on the Tyrone Township line. Abraham Pershing also donated land and built a United Brethren Church just north of Greenlick Place where the John Rice family lived. A group of Mennonite refugees sailed from Hamburg, Germany on May 3, 1700. Others came later. In 1866 Samuel, with his wife and two youngest children, moved to Wayne County, Ohio. On April 11, 1866 he purchased a 130.91 acre farm in Wayne County, Ohio from his son-in-law, Bishop Henry Davidson of the River Brethren Church, for $9, 500.00. At the time of his death in 1885, at age 81 years, he was living at the home of his son, George, in Disco, Hancock County, Illinois.

RICE, SAMUEL B 10 JUN 18047th child of John and Ann Rice was born June 10, 1804. his father dies when he was about 11 years old, and he was "put out" to live with strangers, so he didn't know very much about his family.Samuel Rice married Frances Strickler in 1823. Frances was the daughter of Henry Strickler. Records do not show the name of her mother or brothers and sisters if any (Ancestry has these names and dates). The Stricklers apparently were well-to-do people, however. They settled on the Youghiogheny River in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.. Frances was born there in 1802. They were of German-Swiss descent.Samuel and Frances had eleven children. The following information was copied from his bible which was printed in 1828 and was last known to be in the possession of an Earl Rice who lived in Pennsylvania. The Rev. Samuel Rice, Sr. was a minister in the Church of the Brethren (River Brethren). He moved his family to the vicinity of Smithville, Ohio, probably in 1855, accompanied by some, if not all of this progeny. After the death of his wife in 1870, he and his sons George, Samuel Jr. and Cyrus moved to Hancock County Illinois to join sons Henry and John who had moved to Hancock and Adams Counties respectively about 1857 or 1858. Henry died 19 Dec 1885 and is buried in a county cemetery named Durham Cemetery in Hancock County, Illinois, near LaHarpe. Frances Strickler Rice died 20 Nov 1879 when she and the Rev. Samuel Rice lived near Smithville, Ohio. She is buried there.
